Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG
Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG
The Chianti Colli Fiorentini territory stretches over the hills surrounding Florence, encircling the city from south-west to south-east with three offshoots extending southwards. In practical terms, this Chianti sub-zone includes the municipalities of Montelupo Fiorentino, Fiesole, Signa, Scandicci, Impruneta, Bagno a Ripoli, Rignano sull'Arno, Pontassieve, Montespertoli, San Casciano in Val di Pesa, Tavarnelle in Val di Pesa, Certaldo, Barberino Val d'Elsa, Incisa, Figline Valdarno, Pelago and Reggello.
The area covered in vines spans about 330 hectares (equal to about 3% of the entire Chianti area) at an altitude ranging between 150 and 400 m above sea level with hillsides well exposed to the south-east and south-west that ensure warm soils in spring and perfect ripening of the grapes in autumn.
The wine, which in keeping with Chianti tradition is made from at least 70% Sangiovese grapes, is a “modern” product with never-too-heavy body and a rather limited use of wood (or even none at all) during ageing, which nevertheless retains its exquisite Tuscan soul. Added to this are the numerous variations induced by specific microclimates, different soils and the individual choices of each company.
At the administrative level, the Consorzio di Tutela was established on 5 September 1994 with the aim of enhancing the Florentine territory in the broader panorama of Chianti (whose DOCG recognition dates back to 1984) by securing its own denomination.
