San Gimignano is a picturesque town located in the heart of Tuscany. Nestled on a hilltop, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Known as the Town of Fine Towers, San Gimignano stands out for its medieval skyline adorned with soaring towers, creating a unique and enchanting atmosphere. The town is characterized by its well-preserved historic center, enclosed within ancient walls, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The history of San Gimignano traces back to the Etruscan era, but it flourished during the Middle Ages as a prosperous trading center along the Via Francigena. The town gained economic and political power through agriculture and trade, attracting wealthy families who competed in constructing impressive towers. At the height of its power, around the 13th and 14th centuries, San Gimignano boasted around 72 towers.
San Gimignano is renowned for its wine production and is part of the Chianti wine region. The area’s vineyards benefit from a favorable climate and fertile soil, resulting in the cultivation of high-quality grapes. The most prominent grape variety grown here is Vernaccia, which is used to produce the town’s signature white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano. This crisp and flavorful wine is known for its pale straw color, delicate floral aromas, and notes of citrus and almond. It pairs well with a variety of dishes, including seafood, poultry, and pasta. In addition to Vernaccia, San Gimignano is also home to red wines, primarily made from Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Trebbiano grapes.
The estate is located a few kilometers from the medieval town of San Gimignano, in a very quiet and reserved position that makes it very suitable as a “refuge” for those seeking peace and silence. Services are available in the town (less than 10' drive) and most of Tuscany’s art cities can be reached in less than two hours.
