The DOC was established in 1971, and since then, it has become one of the most famous and appreciated white wines of Italy. The Orvieto region is characterized by a hilly landscape, with clayey and volcanic soils, and a mild and temperate climate. The vineyards are mainly located on the slopes of the hills, between 150 and 450 m above sea level, and are exposed to the south and southwest. The most commonly used grape varieties for the production of Orvieto DOC wine are Trebbiano, Grechetto, Verdello, Malvasia, and Drupeggio.
Orvieto DOC wine is a fresh and fruity white wine, with a straw-yellow color and a delicate and floral aroma. The taste is dry and balanced, with a pleasant acidity and a slightly bitter aftertaste. The surface area of the vineyards in the Orvieto DOC production area is about 2,800 hectares, with a total production of about 130,000 hl of wine per year. The production is carried out by about 600 winegrowers and 13 wineries, which mainly produce still white wines, but also sparkling and dessert wines. Orvieto DOC wine is an excellent accompaniment to fish, white meat, and vegetarian dishes, and it is also perfect as an aperitif. Thanks to its characteristics, Orvieto DOC has been awarded several times in international wine competitions, confirming its high quality and its reputation as one of the best Italian white wines.
